Darell Garretson: Next man up for the Beavs

On Saturday night, the Beavers tough start to the season got a little tougher when starting quarterback Jake Luton went down with a significant injury to his spine. Backup quarterback Darell Garretson joined Travis and Chad on Rip City Drive to discuss the injury and his role as he's expected to be the starter following the bye week.

Garretson talked about what the coaches hope to see from him in practice this week.

“Basically just to take the reins and really get the offense going, just keep plugging along and do what’s asked of me. You know that’s really all I can do, just go out there and facilitate the ball like it needs to be, get it in the hands of guys that are going to make plays. If I’ve got to make a play here or there, then I’ve got to get it done.”

Garretson also said he’s been preparing for this position since camp started back in summer.

“These past three or four weeks, I’ve been diving into the game plan like I was the starter as if I was in Jake’s position. Nothing really changes for me as far as preparation and everything. I’m just running with the ones now.”

Finally Garretson gave his thoughts on whether fans should be upset that Jake Luton was still in the game when he took his vicious hit.

“I don’t know. It’s not really my decision anyway. I’m not a coach. Whatever Coach A. goes with, that’s what we go with. So I really don’t have an opinion on it.”

Take a listen to the interview and be sure to stay tuned to Rip City Radio 620 for all your updates on the Beavers.
