The Beavers took their first giant step in securing one of eight national seeds in the NCAA Baseball Tournament. A convincing 2-0 win over UCLA at Goss Stadium before 3,567 fans.
Lefty Luke Heimlich, the reigning Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week (again) was outstanding. He struck out nine over his first four innings and held the Bruins (35-18 overall, 18-10 Pac-12 Conference) to five hits in 7 2/3 scoreless innings. Brandon Eisert came on in the eighth and threw one pitch to end the frame, before needing 10 in the ninth for his fifth save of the year.
What a season for Heimlich:
Heimlich reached double figures for the seventh consecutive game, and with his third K of the day, surpassed Jonah Nickerson - 131 in 2006 - for the most strikeouts in a season by an Oregon State pitcher.
The left-hander, who also tied the Oregon State single-season record with his 14th win, sits at 139 strikeouts on the year, which ties him for fifth nationally.
So the Beavs improve to 43-9-1 and 19-8-1 on the season and play the Bruins at Gill in game two of the series. Pregame coverage begins at 3;30 on 103.7 the Legend. First pitch at 4:05. The shutout by the way...the fourth straight over UCLA at Goss.
