Kevin Abel does it again! Another Freshman of the year award!

posted by Ron Callan -

It is hard to imagine back at the start of the 2018 College Baseball season that Freshman Kevin Abel would become College Baseball's top freshman performer. He only started seven games in 23 appearances but put it all together at the right time. He is the first pitcher in College World Series history to win four games......No doubt he will start more than seven games in 2019 for Oregon State. Here is the official release from OSU Athletics! Baseball America agrees with D1baseball.com.....both now have selected Abel as the nation's top Freshman.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State right-handed pitcher Kevin Abel has been named the Freshman of the Year for the second time following the 2018 season as Baseball America released its Freshman All-America teams on Wednesday. The honor comes less than a week after Abel was named the Freshman of the Year by D1Baseball.com.

The San Diego native posted an 8-1 record and 2.88 earned run average in 81 1/3 innings in 2018, striking out 108 while holding opponents to a .181 batting average in 23 appearances. He became the first pitcher in NCAA history to win four games at the College World Series, including the victory in the championship game, where he held Arkansas to just two hits in a complete-game shutout.

In those four games in Omaha, Abel, who was named CWS All-Tournament, held Washington, Mississippi State and Arkansas to a combined seven hits, two runs and seven walks in 21 innings, for a 0.86 ERA. He struck out 23.

Abel has now been named a Freshman All-American by Baseball America, D1Baseball.com and Collegiate Baseball. Oregon State has now had at least one Freshman All-American in 15 of the last 17 seasons.
