Congrats to the Oregon State Gymnastics team. They are one of three Pac-12 squads to qualify for the NCAA Championships April 19-20 in Forth Worth, Texas. The Beavers will join UCLA and Utah at the Nationals. Eight teams qualify for the Nationals. The other schools are included in the official release provided by OSU Athletics:
The 15th-ranked, and fourth-seeded, Oregon State gymnastics team earned a spot at NCAA Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, with a second-place finish at the NCAA Corvallis Regional Final at Gill Coliseum Saturday night. The Beavers hit all 24 of their routines and scored 196.900 to edge out top-seeded Florida on the final routine of the meet.
“I am so proud of this team and our staff. They have worked so hard this year,” head coach Tanya Chaplin said. “This is only the second time this year they’ve gone 24-for-24. They showed a lot of strength and courage, and just a grit. This was the second day of competition, and they just honed in on what they needed to do and it came out that we are heading to Fort Worth. That’s incredibly exciting for us.”
No. 4 Florida counted a fall on the balance beam in the opening rotation and were forced to compete from behind throughout the meet chasing one of two tickets to the NCAA Championships. While the Beavers found themselves in a favorable spot from the start it wasn’t decided until sophomore Kaitlyn Yanish finished her floor exercise. Needing a 9.750 to secure their spot, Yanish turned in a fantastic routine and the raucous crowd of 2,486 celebrated when her score of 9.90 flashed on the scoreboard.
Oregon State got off to a strong start on the vault with McKenna Singley and Lacy Dagen each posting scores of 9.850 to lead the squad. Yanish, Destinee Davis and Mary Jacobsen added matching scores of 9.80 to give the Beavers a team total of 49.100.
Trailing second-seeded Denver 49.300-49.100, the Beavers attacked the uneven bars just missing their season-best performance turning in a rotation score of 49.325. Isis Lowery, Mariana Colussi-Pelaez and Sabrina Gill tallied scores of 9.90 and Halli Briscoe added a 9.825.
The Beavers moved to the balance beam where they posted a score of 49.500 in the second round of regionals on Friday and once again were unfazed. Gill notched a score of 9.90 to the squad and Madi Dagen scored 9.875. Lacy Dagen and Maela Lazaro each registered scores of 9.850 for the Beavers.
Still solidly in second place with a 147.725-147.275 entering the last event, the Beavers moved to the floor exercise while Florida went to the bars. OSU’s first three routines topped out at 9.75 as the Gators continued to inch back into the picture with a final rotation performance netting a 49.425 on the bars. However, needing a big score Singley stepped onto the floor and delivered a strong routine to earn a mark of 9.875. Lowery exulted the crowd throughout her routine drawing the gathering to its feet when she registered a 9.90 to set the table for Yanish.
The Beavers will travel to Fort Worth, Texas to compete at the national championships April 19-20 at the Fort Worth Convention Center Arena. The championship event is hosted by Texas Women’s University and Knight Eady. Joining Denver and Oregon State at the championships will be LSU and Utah from the Baton Rouge regional, UCLA and Michigan from the Ann Arbor regional, and Oklahoma and Georgia from the Athens regional.
