Man Faked Heart Attack Before Robbing CVS, Police Say

MAlden CVS heart attack robbers

Police in Massachusetts say they're on the hunt for a suspect who "faked a heart attack" as a distraction while his accomplice robbed a CVS store in Malden.

Surveillance video of the robbery was posted by the department to its Facebook page on Monday, showing the robbery in progress. Malden Police said the incident began after "two White males entered the store together, one eventually approaching the front counter and allegedly “faked a heart attack.” While the first male “faked a heart attack,” the second male jumped over the counter, stealing cash from the register.

"Both males immediately fled the area shortly after."

Police caught up with the man seen jumping on the CVS counter, identifying him as Vyacheslav Phinney, 31, of Malden on Tuesday. Police say they're still searching for the man who faked the heart attack, and identified that suspect as Jesse Meharg, 30, of Lawrence, MA.

Police say Meharg, who was wearing a knit hat during the robbery, was good enough to leave it behind for police when he fled.

"To end on a good note, the fella wearing the knit hat left it behind when he fled! I’m sure if the public's help doesn’t lead to your identity, the hat you left behind likely will," the department wrote.

Police also say they're concerned about Meharg, and are still searching for him not only to make sure that he's "held accountable" for the robbery, but also because they want to "make sure his 'heart problems' have been taken care of by a medical professional."
