Yah the Beavers will have a new look in 2019. Pretty cool new uniforms that the players are excited about! But what kind of team will take the field in Reser on August 30th when Oklahoma State comes to town. The Spring game showed me that Jonathan Smith's offense will be impressive. The defense? It will improve but of course after last season we all know they have a long way to go.
What are the preseason polls saying about where the Beavers stand. One of the polls a lot of people look at is the Athlon Sports preseason poll that ranks all 130 FBS teams. The Beavers moved up quite a bit from last year when they were near the bottom. This year the Beavers start at #95. Here is the paragraph the Magazine dedicated to the Beavs.
95. Oregon State
As expected, Jonathan Smith’s debut at his alma mater was a rebuilding year. The Beavers should be better in 2019, but wins could be tough to find on a difficult schedule. If quarterback Jake Luton can stay healthy, Oregon State should have no trouble scoring points. The receiving corps and the one-two punch of Jermar Jefferson and Artavis Pierce at running back comprise one of the Pac-12’s top collections of skill talent. Oregon State’s defense surrendered a whopping 45.7 points a game last fall. This unit is littered with question marks once again.
So not exactly a glowing endorsement but a team that is getting better. Here is Athlon's prediction for all of the Pac-12 teams and the Beavers non-conference opponents:
Oklahome State sits at #31...and Hawaii at #93.
Pac 12 teams
Wash State 27
Arizona St 45
Oregon St 95
Interesting that the entire conference gets little respect after last season's mediocre performance conference wide. Not one
team in the Top Ten. The Beavers don't face Colorado or USC in 2019. There will be a plethora of polls throughout the summer.
If you are a Beaver fan you no doubt liked the poll touting the Oregon State running back group in the Nation's Top Ten at #9. More predictions and projections right here!!
