US Women's National Team Defeats England, Headed To World Cup Final

Alex Morgan has more to celebrate today than just her 30th birthday.

The United States Women's National Team has defeated England in the semifinals of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup with a 2-1 lead. This is the first time the teams have faced off against each other at a World Cup in 12 years. They will now go on to defend their title as World Cup champions this Sunday. This could be the team's fourth World Cup win.

Christen Press, Megan Rapinoe's replacement, scored at the 10' mark to give the USA a 1-0 lead. England tied up the game less than ten minutes later.

Alex Morgan put the USA in the lead an the 31'. At the 67', England tied it up at 2-2 but the goal was quickly taken away after referees and VAR confirmed offsides. After seven minutes of stoppage time, the USWNT came out victorious.

Before taking on England, the USWNT previously won their 10th consecutive match at a Women's World Cup and continued their streak of making it to the semifinals in all of the Women's World Cups. England, alternatively, has only advanced to the semifinals once during their four World Cup appearances.

Days before the match, British press accused Team USA of spying on their opponents' hotel.

The United States Women's National Team started their World Cup journey off strong with a 13-0 win over Thailand. Next, they took on Chile, Sweden, and Spain and defeated all three teams before an incredible win over the World Cup's host country, France, in the quarterfinals thanks to co-captain, and star midfielder, Megan Rapinoe's amazing two goals. “That is the most intense match I have ever been a part of,” U.S. Coach Jill Ellis said about the match, reporting by the Washington Post.

The USWNT last defeated Japan in 2015 to score their third World Cup title after losing to the same team in 2011 during the final.
