Contestant's Sweet Final Jeopardy Response Chokes Up Alex Trebek

Out of all the game show hosts there have ever been, Jeopardy's Alex Trebek is one of the most beloved. His poise combined with his dry sense of humor make him and his show both educational and entertaining to watch, which is why all of America is rooting for Trebek as he battles pancreatic cancer - all the while still hosting the show. Well this week, during the semi-finals of the Tournament of Champions, one contestant delivered a special message to Alex and it was enough to choke up the veteran television personality.

During the Final Jeopardy round, when contestants don't know the answer, they can guess one or write "Hi mom" or something else silly, but when Dhruv Gaur wasn't sure of the answer to the clue "In the title of a groundbreaking 1890 expose of poverty in New York City slums, these 3 words follow 'How the,'" he chose to write, "What is we ❤️ you, Alex!" The 79-year-old Trebek read it aloud and, as he tried to stay composed, said, "That's very kind, thank you." Alex's voice cracked and he seemed to hold back tears when he saw how much of Dhruv's $2000 he wagered on the act of kindness. Choking up, he said, "Cost you $1,995. You're left with five bucks."

Gaur later took to Twitter to explain why he did it, revealing that Alex just told the contestants he had re-entered treatment. Dhruv explained, "We were all hurting for him so badly. When Final Jeopardy came up, I could've tried to puzzle it together, but really, just kept thinking about Alex, and thought he should know. I'm just very grateful I got the opportunity to say what I know everyone was thinking. Sending all the love. #WeLoveYouAlex"

Alex previously told Canada's CTV News, "I will keep [hosting] as long as my skills do not diminish, and they have started to diminish. I’m sure there are observant members of the television audience that notice also, but they’re forgiving. But there will come a point when [fans and producers] will no longer be able to say, 'It's okay.'"

If you're wondering, the Final Jeopardy answer was "Other Half Lives."
