Volunteers Clean Downtown Portland

SOLVE, Portland Business Alliance, and Portland Lodging Alliance with the support of Miller Nash Graham & Dunn LLP and Schlesinger Companies hosted the second Downtown Volunteer Litter Cleanup Day with four volunteer check-in locations throughout Downtown Portland.

In total, 328 volunteers met at four locations and collected over 3,200 pounds of litter from Downtown Portland streets, sidewalks, and parks.

This is the second Downtown Volunteer Litter Cleanup SOLVE and its partners have come together to host this month. The momentum of the first event left organizers feeling they needed to make the Downtown Volunteer Litter Cleanup Day a monthly occurrence.

The next event will take place on October 30.

The SOLVE Downtown Monthly Volunteer Cleanups provide free cleanup supplies and disposal to anyone who would like to participate. Volunteers received heavy duty garbage bags, vinyl gloves, a safety vest, and a litter grabber, before spreading out to clean the Rose City. These send a message that Portlanders have pride in their city and are willing to come together to care for it. The event also brings Portlanders to the heart of Downtown where many people have visited less often since working from home. Collecting litter makes Portland’s Downtown more welcoming for visitors to work, shop, and dine.

Volunteers collected disposable masks, cigarette butts, and take out containers among other items that can easily be washed into the nearby Willamette River during the rainy season. Anyone who is interested in joining SOLVE’s cleanup efforts should visit http://www.solveoregon.org to learn more and get involved.
