PPS, along with all Oregon public schools, will deliver in-person instruction for the 2021-22 school year.
“We are very much looking forward to the full reopening of our schools, and our students receiving in-person instruction five days a week,” said Guadalupe Guerrero, Superintendent of Portland Public Schools. “This past year, we learned about and put in place a number of health and safety measures that supported our ability to bring students on campus. It is these layered mitigation strategies, as suggested by public health experts, that we believe will continue to help us ensure the safest possible learning environments for our students and employees. And of course, pandemic conditions are local and specific, so we are continuing to rely on guidance from Multnomah County Health and our PPS Health Advisory Panel.”
The Oregon Department of Education shared guidance this summer that empowers school district leaders - in partnership with local public health - to make decisions about how to implement health and safety protocols. PPS is taking dozens of steps that range from physical distancing to sanitation and ventilation in an effort to welcome students back to a safe environment and keep the community safe. PPS will also require masks when indoors in all schools (in accordance with state mandates).
Some of the PPS safety measures and protocols include:
- Consistent with state requirements, all PPS staff (and partner staff) and PreK-12 students will be required to wear masks when indoors, regardless of vaccination status.
- PPS has over 1.7 million age-appropriate masks in stock throughout our schools for those who need them.
- Three (3) feet physical distance for students and staff will be maintained, to the extent possible.
- HEPA filters are in every classroom and on school buses.
- Upgrading central air filters in every school building.
- We will continue to provide testing for symptomatic students and staff.
- We will regularly stock classrooms with disinfectant and hand sanitizer.
