Beaver WBB dominates Cal Poly in season opener 79-54!

It was an impressive opener for the Women's basketball team at Oregon State. 4,468 fans were wowed by the team and the new scoreboard hanging directly over Gill. Here is the official release by Oregon State Athletics

The No. 8 Oregon State women's basketball team opened the 2018-19 season with a victory, taking down Cal Poly 79-54 Friday evening at Gill Coliseum. "It was an incredible atmosphere to be out there in Gill," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "I'm proud of the effort tonight. The first game of the season is usually some survival as you try to figure things out. Cal Poly is a talented and well-coached team. I thought we got better as it went, and we moved the ball well. I'm proud of the effort, grateful for the win, and thankful for Beaver nation coming out like they did." Redshirt-sophomore Destiny Slocum tallied 15 points and eight assists in her Oregon State debut. Junior Mikayla Pivec finished with 15 points on 7-for-13 shooting to go with nine rebounds as she narrowly missed a double-double. Junior Kat Tudor hit four 3-pointers to finish with 14 points, while sophomore Taya Corosdale rounded out the Oregon State player in double-figures with 10 points and seven boards. Senior Katie McWilliams tallied seven points, five assists and four rebounds. As a team, Oregon State shot 49.2 percent from the floor, and outscored Cal Poly 12-3 on fast-break points. The teams went back-and-forth early on, as Oregon State took a 15-12 lead into the first media timeout. The Beavers jumped out to a 25-12 lead early in the second quarter, as the OSU defense clamped down on the Mustangs. The Beavers took a 12-point lead into the intermission, heading to the locker room up 36-24. Eight Oregon State players scored in the opening 20 minutes. OSU continued to hold the lead in the third quarter, ending the period on a 7-0 run to head to the closing frame up 58-42. The Beavers picked up right where they left off to start the fourth, scoring nine unanswered points to stretch the lead past 20, on their way to the 23-point win. Senior Joanna Grymek made her first career start in the contest, scoring six points on 3-for-7 shooting. The Beavers will be back at home Wednesday for its Beavers Beyond the Classroom game, as Arkansas-Pine Bluff visits Gill Coliseum for an 11 a.m. tip.
